Best Yurts For Sale
Yurts for sale can be found both on the internet and locally. A really good, new yurt can cost around the same as a family small family car. Many people are buying yurts as an alternative to extending their home or as a way to spend summers in the outdoors. They are not a cheap item so it is vital to make the correct choice when you are buying yours.
The yurt consists of a cover of either layered felt and wool or another insulating material which is placed over a wooden lattice frame. This frame is the foundation of the yurt. It is this that give the yurt its great stability allowing it to stand up to harsh conditions, far beyond anything a tent could cope with. Yurts which are erected for longer periods are usually placed on a wooden deck or base. This means you have a wooden floor making the yurt feel less like a tent and more like a house.
Kinds of Yurts For Sale
There are two main kinds of yurt that you will probably want to consider. The first is the traditional Mongolian yurt or 'ger' as it is more properly called. Secondly there are some very new and exciting modern interpretations of the yurt that you might like to consider.
Traditional Mongolian Yurts or Gers
Yurts are thousands of years old and originated in Mongolia. They are more properly called 'gers'. Yurt is really the Russian name for this traditional portable house. The nomadic people of Mongolia still use their gers and move them from place to place as they graze their animals. Mongolian yurts are great in cold, dry climates so they will be suitable for some parts of the US. They are warm and cosy. Usually they have some sort of wood-burning stove. The stove is traditionally placed in the middle of the yurt.
The sides of the yurt come down to about 4 feet while the central area is around 8 feet high. The sides are traditionally where the inhabitants sleep. Beds are covered with beautiful rugs and cushions and convert into sofas for use during the day.
One side of the yurt is used for food preparation and storage. There is a 'sky hole' or flap in the center at the top of the yurt that is opened to allow air to circulate. A chimney for the wood-burning stove usually goes through the sky hole. One piece of peat or one log is traditionally burned every day even if the weather is good. This allows the yurt to remain dry and cosy.
Yurts For Sale
Problems with traditional yurts include mice or other rodents either infesting the yurt itself or stealing the wool insulation to line their own nests. Other animals rarely cause problems because the yurt has a strong lattice structure.
Lack of daylight can be an issue in traditional yurts. There are no windows in the traditional design. All light comes from the front door being left open or the felt sides being rolled up from the bottom during the day.
Mildew and damp can be a big problem in wetter climates. A traditional felt yurt must, in most parts of the US, be covered with a canvas top cover but this can lead to problems with damp. You will have to take a variety of precautions to prevent the yurt interior being covered in mildew within just a few weeks of putting it up. Mildew and black mould spores are both powerful asthma triggers damaging your health as well as causing damage to the yurt.
Modern Yurts
US Yurt makers have been quick to realise that traditional yurts are not ideal for our climate. They have experimented with ultra modern materials and total changed the way the yurt functions.
Modern yurts are often made from special insulated fabric that was first developed by NASA. This fabric has the amazing capacity to keep warm in winter yet be cool in summer. Modern yurts also often have windows built into the design. They are usually behind the lattice frame which ensures the Yurts For Sale remains stable and secure.
